About WordTurn

WordTurn is a small, independent site about words: the games we play with them, the way we count and measure them, and the craft of writing them clearly. Rather than long articles you have to read end to end, the site is built around a handful of small, single-purpose tools, each aimed at one concrete question a player, writer, or puzzler actually asks.

The tools, and how they work

The Scrabble Score Calculator adds up a word using the standard English Scrabble tile values — the vowels and common consonants at one point, rare letters like Q and Z at ten — and lets you apply a double- or triple-word-score square to see the play total. The Word Counter tallies words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, and paragraphs, and estimates reading time at roughly 200 words per minute. The Syllable Counterestimates syllables with a vowel-group heuristic: it counts runs of adjacent vowels, drops a silent trailing “e,” and never returns fewer than one per word.

The Readability Scoreapplies the Flesch Reading Ease formula — 206.835 minus 1.015 times words-per-sentence minus 84.6 times syllables-per-word — and reports the grade band the text lands in. The Pangram Checker tests whether a sentence uses all 26 letters and lists any that are missing, and the Anagram Checkercompares two words or phrases by sorting their letters — ignoring case, spaces, and punctuation — and shows the letters they share. Every tool runs in your browser as you type; nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.

Beyond the tools, the blog and learnsection cover word games, wordplay, and the reasoning behind the numbers the tools produce — letter values, syllables, readability, pangrams, and anagrams. The museum is a browsable, illustrated collection with every entry, image, and fact drawn from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, there for the pleasure of looking and learning.

What WordTurn is, and isn’t

WordTurn is an independent site, supported by advertising, which is how the tools stay free with no account required. It is not a dictionary, a game server, or a validity judge: the tools compare and count letters and apply well-known formulas, but they don’t decide whether a word is legal in a given game, and the anagram and pangram checkers don’t confirm that a string is a real word. WordTurn is not affiliated with Scrabble or its trademark owners, or with any dictionary or word-game publisher it references; letter values and rules are cited for reference only. Every result — a tile score, a syllable count, a readability grade — is an estimate or a heuristic meant as a helper, not an authority.
